The Illinois Clemency Project: Fighting for Social
Justice for Battered Women
The Illinois Clemency Project is dedicated to securing
clemency for battered women imprisoned for injuring or killing their abusive
spouses.
Margaret Byrne, the Project’s Director, founded the group in the early 1990’s. Since its conception, attorneys, law professors, law students and other sympathetic parties have fought to achieve clemency for dozens of battered women in the Illinois prison system.
